The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute is a public institution with the mandate to contribute to the improvement of the health of populations internationally and nationally through excellence in research, services, and teaching and training. The Society, Gender and Health Unit within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health investigate gender sensitive ways of improving health and reducing vulnerability in Africa , Asia and Europe . Emphasizing cultural and social dimensions of health and illness, the unit develops innovative methodologies for cutting-edge research and effective health promotion, prevention and disease control programmes. It closely collaborates with other units of the Swiss TPH, with the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science and with the Institutes of Social Anthropology, Sociology and History at the University of Basel .
DescriptionWe are seeking a dynamic Social Scientist who will join the team and take a lead in bringing to prominence the Swiss TPH efforts to understand and eliminate social disparities in health, locally, nationally, and internationally. The new social scientist faculty member should be an energetic and accomplished scholar to advance the commitment to research that contributes to the vision and mandate of Swiss TPH to improve public health.
RequirementsA successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in sociology or a related field as well as demonstrated scholarly distinction appropriate for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant or junior professor. Candidates with a SNF Förderprofessur (or a similar Assistant Professor fellowship) or willing to submit applications for tenure track fellowships will be particularly welcome. Background in mixed methods approaches to social determinants of health, social justice and equity is required, and experience in collaboration with communities on public health initiatives is desirable. Applied research areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, social determinants of infectious diseases (e.g. malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis), chronic non-communicable diseases (e.g. cancer, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and mental health problems) and zoonotic diseases (e.g. bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis and rabies). The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research agenda.

• Ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships that foster inter- and transdisciplinary research and scholarship.

• Dedication to recruiting, developing and supervising diverse and talented PhD students.

• Commitment to the educational goals of a diverse and highly qualified student body.

• Experience and interest in developing international research partnerships.

• Ability to represent the institute in the regional, national and international public health communities.

Proficiency in English and German is required.
