Fritz Schiesser re-elected for another term of office as President of the ETH Board

Berne, 16.09.2011 - The Federal Council has confirmed the President of the ETH Board, Fritz Schiesser, in his office for another four years. The new, second term of office begins on 1 January 2012 and lasts until the end of 2015.

Schiesser, who is today 57 years of age, obtained a doctorate in law at the University of Zurich in 1982 and is a lawyer and notary in his home canton Glarus. From 1990 to 2008, Schiesser represented his canton in the Council of States and was a member of its Committee for Science, Education and Culture. In 2003/2004, he presided over the Council of States. Simultaneously, from 1999 to 2007, he was President of the Foundation Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Since 1 January 2008, Fritz Schiesser has presided over the ETH Board, during which time he has earned a great deal of respect in setting up the 2012-2016 strategic planning for the ETH Domain, among other things. The other members of the ETH Board are to be elected or re-elected in the course of the next three months.

The ETH Board is the strategic governing and supervisory body for the ETH Domain. The ETH Domain consists of the two Federal Institutes of Technology ETH Zurich and EPFL, and the four federal research institutes PSI, WSL, Empa and Eawag. The ETH Board is elected by the Swiss Federal Council and represents the ETH Domain to the government and authorities at the federal level. It agrees on development objectives with the institutions and carries out strategic controlling. The Board also allocates federal funding to the institutions, acts as the electoral authority and liaises with social partners. Furthermore, in its role as Federal Construction and Properties Service, it ensures preservation of the value and functionality of the real estate portfolio.
