Certificates of Advanced Studies

CAS programmes aim to give greater depth or interdisciplinary breadth to an original academic qualification. They are aimed at university graduates who are working and wish to enhance their professional skills or specialise in a particular subject. They correspond to at least 10 ECTS credits and 150 contact hours and may involve written project work or a thesis. They are organised in the form of block courses or courses on fixed days of the week and last one to two years.

Programme structure

Programme description

Regardless of which geographical region or which policy area you are working in, you need the ability to dissect multidimensional policy issues, the tools to lead outside your area of expertise and a vision for governance in an age of interconnectivity and technological disruption. The CAS ETH PGA is a certificate programme designed for aspiring public sector leaders to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence across these three critical dimensions.

Objectives

Participants will learn to understand key governance frameworks and problems, dissect multi–dimensional policy issues and effectively lead across the spectrum of technical, human, and conceptual challenges.

Professional perspectives

Programme graduates will strengthen their ability to effectively implement public administration and governance projects and will position themselves to take on roles of increasing responsibility within their organisation.

Programme structure

One 15-day block.
64 hours individual preparation and debriefing exercises, 128 contact hours, 175 hours individual CAS thesis writing.

Additional information

Throughout the course, participants analyse best–practice cases in order to translate innovative solutions into their own political and administrative context. The CAS ETH PGA is structured around innovative, competency–based learning experiences, including simulations, peer–to–peer learning, excursions, and best-practices analyses, as well as expert lectures and group discussions.

Target group

The programme is designed for motivated and accomplished junior to midlevel professionals of any nationality, who want to take on challenging governance projects and transform public institutions.

Requirements

Master’s degree acknowledged by ETH or equivalent educational qualifications; minimum of three years relevant practical experience. Fluency in English (C1).
