Assistant Professor (with Tenure Track) for Data Science in Diabetes Care

The position will be attached academically to the Chair of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Bern and the University Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine and Metabolism (UDEM). UDEM is a leading clinical and research department at Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, and the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern, with a strong research track on diabetes technology and digitally enabled diabetes care. Together with the DCB, UDEM is committed to conceiving, designing, and validating new approaches and solutions based on cutting-edge technology and data science to solve unmet clinical needs in diabetes care. In line with the medical faculty’s 2030 digitalization strategy, the position is embedded in an innovative multi-disciplinary research network that includes the Center for AI in Medicine (CAIM), the Department of Clinical Research (DCR), and the Insel Data Science Center (IDSC).

Description

To strengthen its research portfolio in translational and technology research, the existing research network is to be expanded by an academic specialist in data science with a particular interest and focus on diabetes care and diabetes technology. The successful candidate must bring a proven track record in research and clinical translation, particularly in developing and translating data science approaches toward clinical adoption. The candidate is expected to
  • understand unmet clinical needs for patient benefit in the field of diabetes care,
  • design and develop comprehensive data environments and platforms,
  • develop strategies to handle large and complex data sets combining various sources and formats, including unstructured data,
  • pursue data-science research with a strong understanding of regulatory processes and requirements, including data protection regulation,
  • develop and apply cutting-edge analytical methodology, including artificial intelligence/machine learning,
  • incorporate systematic regulatory activities that facilitate compliant clinical investigation,
  • seek out targeted technology cooperation with pertinent industry partners,
  • facilitate commercial exploitation through an entrepreneurial mindset and vision.

Requirements

Candidates should hold a PhD in engineering, physics, computer science, or other related areas, ideally have 3 - 5 years of postdoctoral and independent research experience, and are expected to initiate and establish an internationally competitive research group. Experience in the field of diabetes research will be a strong plus. Acquiring third-party funding and an ability to closely collaborate with clinical researchers, engineers, and industrial partners is key as the aim is to build an integrated, multidisciplinary research laboratory committed to developing and translating novel medical applications, products, or services into clinical care and the healthcare marketplace. The appointee will have the opportunity to teach graduate-level courses within the University’s Biomedical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Master’s programs.
