In today’s society, smartphones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives and are increasingly popular, particularly among young people. They provide us with a vast array of content and services, which can have both positive and negative impacts. Furthermore, the pervasive nature of smartphones has transformed our lifestyle and social interactions, leading to moments of enjoyment in shared online experiences, as well as instances of distraction and discord. These observations emphasise the necessity of using this tool conscientiously.
In 2021 and 2022, the Agora project "Are you connected?Towards the conscious use of smartphones among children and adolescents", financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and run by researcher Dr Anne-Linda Camerini from the Institute of Public Health at USI (IPH) and Laura Marciano , now a researcher in Public Health at Harvard University. Various workshops were held with primary and secondary school students, events open to the public and information material, all based on the studies of the two researchers and in collaboration with L’ ideatorio , Lugano Living Lab and IBSA Foundation. The material comprises five short videos with accompanying booklets, offering information and tips on promoting conscious smartphone use. They are available for free on the following websites.
