The ETH Board appointed Lorenz Herrmann as a new member of the Empa’s Directorate at its meeting on 7-8 December 2022.
Lorenz Herrmann previously held various management positions at the technology company ABB, including head of the Energy and Materials research department at the ABB research center in Dättwil. His research focuses on joining technologies and corrosion, Advanced Materials Processing, electron microscopy and nanotechnology. Herrmann studied at the University of Regensburg and completed his doctorate at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and at the University of Regensburg on the electronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes.
Since August 2022, Lorenz Herrmann has headed Empa’s Department Advanced Materials and Surfaces, succeeding Pierangelo Gröning in this role, who will retire next year. In addition, Lorenz Herrmann will also take over as head of Empa’s research focus area Nanoscale Materials and Technologies on 1 January 2023. Thanks to his many years of experience in industry, Herrmann brings with him a great deal of leadership experience in a multinational team of a research institution.
