Today, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) announced that Luca Giorgetti, Senior group leader at the FMI, has been elected as EMBO member. Giorgetti is among the 69 new members and associate members joining the EMBO community of more than 2,000 leading life scientists in Europe and beyond.
Election as EMBO Member recognizes a scientist’s research excellence and outstanding achievements. Collectively, EMBO members influence the direction of European science and strengthen research communities across Europe.Commenting on the 69 elected members this year, Fiona Watt, EMBO Director said: "These remarkable scientists have unravelled molecular secrets of life, deepened our understanding of health and disease, and are paving the way for further discoveries and innovations. Their achievements reinforce the critical role that life science research plays in the lives of citizens across Europe and the world."
In recent years, Luca Giorgetti and his team have made significant contributions to our understanding of the relationship between chromosome structure and transcriptional regulation (how a cell regulates the conversion of DNA to RNA) in mammalian cells. The Giorgetti group aims to understand how enhancers control transcription of their target genes from large genomic distances, in the context of the three-dimensional structure of chromosomes and their dynamics. To this aim, the researchers use an integrated approach combining genomics, genetic engineering, live-cell microscopy and physical modelling.
Giorgetti becomes the 9th group leader currently working at the FMI to be an EMBO member.
New members are nominated and elected by the existing EMBO Membership. EMBO will formally welcome the new members at the annual Members’ Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, on 25-27 October 2023.
