Agroscope is looking for a:

PostDoc ’Trade-off and benefit of reduced fertilization in Europe’

Reducing fertilization and thereby environmental effects of nutrient surplus is part of the Farm to Fork strategy of the European Union. To assess potential trade-offs of lower nitrogen fertilization at the European scale we are setting up a framework that links different models and also includes national statistics. The goal is to quantify effects of reduced fertilization on yields, soil organic carbon sequestration and nitrogen losses. To synthesize the results, we are looking for a motivated, team-oriented person with enthusiasm for applied research. The post is embedded in the project SIMPLE, which is funded by the European Joint Program Soil (EJP Soil) and is carried out in cooperation with six partner countries in Europe.

About us

Agroscope is the Swiss federal center of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector. Its researchers carry out their activities at various sites in Switzerland. Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld (from 2025: Posieux FR), Agroscope is affiliated with the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.
The research group Climate an Agriculture at the Reckenholz site in Zurich studies the mitigation of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and climate-change adaptation measures, and is responsible for Switzerland’s greenhouse gas inventory.

Description

  • Synthesizing results delivered by project partners on yields, soil organic carbon stocks and nitrous oxide emissions for cropland
  • Performing trade-off analysis and formulating policy recommendations
  • Drafting scientific publications and presenting results at international conferences

Exigences

  • Doctorate in the field of Natural, Agricultural or Environmental Sciences
  • Broad knowledge of environmental issues in the agricultural sector
  • Expertise in synthesizing large and complex data sets is an asset
  • Good organization and communication skills
  • Knowledge of two official Swiss languages as well as a very good (spoken and written) -knowledge of English
