NEST unit nominated for architecture

On 8 June 2018, the "Award for Marketing + Architecture" will be presented for the sixth time. Among the nominated projects is the NEST unit "Solar Fitness & Wellness". The unit combines unconventional architecture with a worldwide unique energy objective: to operate a wellness facility using only solar energy and the sporty contribution of its fitness users.

On the top platform of NEST , the modular research and innovation building of Empa and Eawag in Dübendorf, the "Solar Fitness & Wellness" unit has been enthroned since August 2017. Behind the impressive glass façade three ellipsoids float, which contain two saunas and a steam bath. Below is the fitness area. The concept of architect Peter Dransfeld from Ermatingen is surprising. The ellipsoids are close to the ideal shape of a sphere and offer the lowest possible heat loss - and also an unmistakable identity for a pioneering form of energy use. The goal of the "Solar Fitness & Wellness" unit is to massively reduce the energy consumption of wellness facilities so that operation with energy produced directly in and at the unit will be possible. In order to achieve this, a newly developed wellness technology is used, which, compared to conventional systems for heating saunas and steam baths, only requires one sixth of the energy.

Together with 20 other projects in a total of six categories, the "Solar Fitness & Wellness" unit has been nominated by a top-class jury for this year’s "Award for Marketing + Architecture" . The prize is awarded to companies, institutions, architects and builders who use architecture as a high-quality and meaningful marketing instrument. Exciting architecture that draws attention to a sustainable idea - this is how the architectural implementation of the "Solar Fitness & Wellness" unit can be seen. Realized with the help of numerous partners from research and industry - above all the Swiss-Liechtensteinian building technology association suissetec - the NEST unit demonstrates how sustainable wellness is possible. The numerous visits of architects, planners and building experts nurture the hope that this idea will not remain unique, but will soon find its application in the market.

In addition to the awards by the jury, the audience also selects one winning project. Here you can see all nominees and vote for your favorite.
