The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research centre for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. Proton therapy of cancer has been developed at PSI over several decades, from pioneering work to routine clinical practice. The Centre for Proton Therapy operates a cyclotron based accelerator facility with two gantries and a treatment room for eye melanoma. Today many cancer patients are treated routinely at this facility. The Large Research Facilities Department takes responsibility for operation and development of the cyclotron and the beam transport systems.

For the development of a gantry with superconducting magnets and the further optimization of the existing beam transport system we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow - Physicist


The work comprises design work for proton beam optical systems in the context of medical applications. You will contribute to the further optimization of the beam dynamics in the dedicated cyclotron and beam transport lines to the different treatment areas. In addition to that you will be involved in the design of a new gantry system, based on a novel design with superconducting magnets. You will work in dedicated development projects for PSI’s proton therapy facility, but also to conceptual studies of new ideas.


You hold a PhD in physics and you should possess some familiarity with particle accelerators in general, beam optical systems and basic knowledge of common computational methods to design such systems. Furthermore knowledge of basic accelerator components, for example dipole, quadrupole magnets, or the diagnostic means to characterize a beam, would be helpful. You have the capability to introduce new ideas and define objectives. As a team-oriented and communicative person you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary group. You act independently, show initiative and are practice-oriented. Your profile is completed by a good knowledge of English and German and your willingness to work in radiation-controlled zones.
