The Swiss Ornithological Institute is a non-profit foundation supported by the public. It is the largest private field research institute in Switzerland. We regularly work together with different universities in Switzerland and abroad. The Swiss Ornithological Institute works out scientific facts in ornithology, provides arguments for the conservation of birds, and disseminates information on birds to the public, media and authorities.


We are offering a position for a

Research scientist in avian ecology (80 - 100%)

to join the ecology research group. Within this group, we investigate ecological conditions and mechanisms underlying reproductive strategies and dispersal behaviour of bird species of conservation concern. The research scientist will work in the project “Costs and benefits of natal and breeding dispersal in a fragmented population of the little owl ( Athene noctua )” and will be responsible for revising analyses of unpublished work and writing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. In particular, topics such as habitat suitability, secondary sex ratio, thermal benefits of sheltered roosting sites and post-fledging behaviour will be covered.


The successful candidate should have

  • a PhD in ecology, behavioural ecology or environmental sciences;
  • strong interests and excellent skills in scientific writing
  • experience in statistical analyses with R
  • excellent knowledge of the English language (with knowledge of a Swiss national language desirable);
  • strong interest in behavioural ecology of birds;

The successful candidate will work in a small team of closely cooperating researchers. The position is initially offered for one year with the possibility of extension. The intended starting date is September 2017. Salary is according to the regulations of the Swiss Ornithological Institute. Working place is Sempach, Switzerland.
