Within the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at ETH Zurich, the newly forming group on Agricultural Ecology (Dr. Christian Schöb), is recruiting

The successful candidates will work on the SNSF project ‘Ecology and evolution in practice: A plant’plant interaction-based approach to the evolution of biodiversity effects on productivity?. The overall goal is to quantify plant?plant interactions and their consequences for ecosystem functioning in mixed cropping systems, to investigate their dependence on varying levels of resource availability and to understand their role for natural selection processes. The project will consist of large garden experiments in Switzerland and Spain and include a significant amount of field and lab work at both sites. Tasks include set-up and maintenance of the crop communities in experimental gardens, monitoring of resource conditions, measurements of plant functional traits, biomass and seed harvests and statistical analyses and publication of the research findings. We also expect participation in outreach activities.

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent candidates who are passionate to work at the interface between plant ecology and agricultural sciences. The applicants should have a M.Sc degree (or equivalent) in ecology, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences or a related topic and are expected to have good quantitative and statistical skills (with knowledge of R being desirable). The applicants should enjoy field and lab work and must be prepared to spend substantial time in the field in Switzerland and in Spain. Apart from a driving licence, a good standard of written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of German and/or Spanish would be advantageous.
