Postdoctoral Researcher ‘Urban materials and their impacts on the urban climate’

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated candidate that will investigate the influence of various material properties and types of urban materials on the urban climate. The storage and release of heat and moisture in the built environment can vary depending on the material properties such as moisture capacity and conductivity, heat capacity and conductivity or surface albedo. Such properties, and their use to obtain evaporative cooling under proper conditions, enable urban materials to reduce the severity of the heat island effect as well as to improve local thermal comfort. The aims of the research include quantifying the impact of different types of urban materials on the urban microclimate, evaluating related mitigation measures for local urban heat island and develop new multifunction/adaptive solutions. The research involves experimental and numerical, mainly CFD, studies.

The candidate should be a responsible and communicative scientist with a doctoral degree in mechanical or building/civil engineering, physics, materials science or similar field. Knowledge of heat and mass transport in porous media is requested. Experience in experimental material characterization and in numerical methods (FEM and CFD) is beneficial. The candidate should be proficient in English.
