We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated candidate that will investigate the evaporative cooling effect of natural (rain) or artificial (spraying) wetting in urban environment. The rain load for various urban configurations with different building density and arrangement will be analyzed using our existing Eulerian multiphase model implemented in OpenFOAM. The existing rain model will be coupled to an existing urban drainage model consisting of a 2D-surface runoff model and a 1D-channel flow model for the sewer drainage system. This integrated drainage model will allow us to quantify the available water flows that can be used for evaporative cooling. The model will be validated through field and wind-tunnel measurements as well as laboratory experiments that will focus on the wetting and drying of porous building materials. The aim of the project is to use this improved and validated wind-driven rain model in combination with an in-house urban microclimate model to evaluate the impact of natural and artificial wetting on urban microclimate and thermal comfort.

The candidate should be a responsible and communicative scientist with a master degree in physics, materials science, mechanical or building engineering or similar field. The candidate should have strong background in fluid mechanics, as well as heat and mass transport, and an interest to plan and perform experiments at various scales. Knowledge in CFD, preferably for urban wind flow applications, is highly advantageous. The candidate should be proficient in English.
