PhD position in image guided control for the automation of single cell microfluidic platforms

The research project focuses on developing and refining an automated microfluidic platform able to recover single stem cells undergoing a process of differentiation, while at the same time, preserving cell identity and lineage relationships. For this purpose, online image-based control algorithms will be coupled with electromechanical systems, within a programmable platform that allows the isolation of single cells of interest for further downstream analysis. The main ambition of this collaborative project is to unveil the relevance of certain biomolecular mechanisms (inheritance, noise and involvement of gene regulatory networks) in differentiation processes.
The ETH Zurich offers an international and world-leading research setting with first class infrastructure including fully equipped clean rooms for microfabrication, analytical facilities and technical support in the form of electronic and mechanical workshops.

The candidate should hold a Master of Science degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or physics with first class grades. She/he should be proficient with image processing and visualization methods for the control of electromechanical systems. Programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python, OpenCV & Arduino) and a keen interest in experimental work are requisite. In addition, experience with mammalian cell culture and multilayer microfluidic chip fabrication are an asset. An innovative spirit, the ability to work within teams and initiative are also expected.
