The EPFL Blue Brain Project (BBP), situated on the Campus Biotech in Geneva, Switzerland, applies advanced neuroinformatics, data analytics, high-performance computing and simulation-based approaches to the challenge of understanding the structure and function of the mammalian brain in health and disease. The BBP provides the community with regular releases of data, models and tools to accelerate neuroscience discovery and clinical translation through open science and global collaboration.

For our Core Services team, we are looking for an experienced System Engineer with a modern, ambitious mind to participate in the team’s daily DevOps work. We guarantee that no day will be the same nor will you be bored as you will be working with state of the art HPC hardware and modern software: we use e.g. OpenStack, Openshift, Ceph, ELK, Jenkins, Gerrit, Puppet, GPFS, Slurm and many other technologies to provide our researchers with modern computing infrastructure.

What we offer:

  • An internationally visible research project using supercomputers together with cloud solutions
  • A young, dynamic, inter-disciplinary and international working environment
  • An opportunity to get your hands dirty with new technologies as they emerge

What we require from you:

  • Excellent knowledge of Linux (e.g. RedHat/CentOS, Ubuntu)
  • Proficiency in programming/scripting languages (e.g. Python, Ruby, Perl, shell)
  • Proficiency in configuration, provisioning and CI tools (e.g. Puppet, Ansible, Git, Jenkins)
  • Track record of operating production services in various computing environments

What we count as your advantage:

  • Experience with High Performance Computing solutions
  • Exposure to cloud and container technologies (e.g. Openstack, OpenShift, Singularity)
  • Experience with compute, storage (GPFS, Ceph, NetApp) and datacentre networking (IB, Ethernet)

What are your specific responsibilities:

  • While you’d be contributing to the daily DevOps work of the Core Services team, emphasis in your work would be on the new HPC cluster’s development & operations. Your duties would include e.g. provisioning operating system updates and software stacks to compute nodes with configuration management tools, optimizing the use of scheduling software (Slurm), monitoring the HPC cluster/environment and ensuring the operational quality of the HPC Service.

What is your profile:

  • Bachelor or Master degree in computer science - or similar
  • Experience working in a collaborative and multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral
  • Fast learner, eager to expand your domains of expertise
  • Proven ability to work both independently and in team-based environments
  • Fluent communication in English (written and spoken)
