Description

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Environmental Microbiology (Umik) is announcing a

aimed at outstanding young scientists with exciting research ideas in the field of environmental microbiology. The goals of the fellowship are to support early career researchers on a path towards independence and support novel research relevant to the department’s main activities.

Research focus
Qualified individuals are invited to apply for the fellowship to conduct research in any field in the general area of environmental microbiology, including but not limited to:

  • Aquatic environmental microbiology
  • Environmental microbial biochemistry
  • Public health microbiology
  • Engineered aquatic environments
  • Experimental microbiology
  • Microbial ecology and evolution
  • Mathematical modeling of microbial processes
  • Novel microbiological methods

Selection of the postdoctoral fellow will be based on his or her academic record and his or her proposed research project. Candidates should seek to leverage the expertise within the department to advance their research project. Research projects that include clear synergies with two or more research groups within the department are strongly encouraged. An earned Ph.D. degree at the time of postdoctoral appointment is required. Preference is given to early stage researchers.

A successful application will include
  • A brief letter of application that includes the title of the proposed research project and identifies one or more group leaders that could host the candidate
  • A brief abstract (approx. 250 words) written for a reader who is not an expert in the topic
  • A curriculum vitae including a list of publications
  • A description of a research project to be conducted at Eawag (two pages max., including references)
  • Names and contact information for two academic references (please do not include letters with the application)
