PositionJunior Researcher / PhD Position

The Institute of Electromagnetic Fields (IEF) performs research on the wave and particle characteristics of electromagnetic fields with particular focus over the optical, the terahertz and microwave frequencies. Researchers investigate important applications such as high-speed optical communications, wireless communications, photovoltaics, medical and more. The institute maintains state-of-the-art labs both at the ETH center as well as at the IBM Rüschlikon site, and maintains collaborations with leading companies and universities worldwide.

The project aims at creating novel monolithic electronic-photonic integrated circuits for application to next-generation wireless communication systems operating at millimeter-waves.
This vacancy is part of the SNSF Ambizione Project "Millimeter-wave on-chip wireless-optical transceivers for 5G wireless communications" granted to Dr. Maurizio Burla by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
You will work to all the phases of the realization of novel integrated circuits capable of overcoming the speed bottleneck of current optical-wireless transceivers, starting from system analysis and design, through simulation, layout, fabrication and testing.
More information on the project is available at the following page: ?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">
You will join a vibrant, dynamic and fast-paced team of about 30 researchers working on multidisciplinary research topics, spanning from photonic integrated circuit design to optical communications. You will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Maurizio Burla. You will have access to world-class facilities, including the photonic and mm-wave electronic characterization laboratory, with state-of-the-art equipment for the characterization of optical and electronic devices up to sub-THz frequencies; an optical communication system laboratory with the capability to generate and test Tbit/s data traffic; the Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center (BRNC), a state-of-the art cleanroom facility equipped for all processing steps needed to perform silicon and silicon-nitride processing, as well as to the FIRST laboratories at ETH Hönggerberg, where III/V materials can be processed. You will also have the possibility to attend courses and training on a variety of relevant disciplines. The contract is offered for a total of 3 years, conditional to a probation period. You will be affiliated with ETH Zurich, Switzerland, which is a top ranking international university in the fields of technology and natural science.

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a solid background in electrical engineering or physics, preferably with a focus on integrated circuit design, microwave engineering or photonic integrated circuits. We particularly value your experience in one (or more) of the following areas: Analog integrated circuits; Microwave monolithic integrated circuits; Antenna design; Microwave engineering; Photonic integrated circuits design, fabrication and testing. Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools and/or analog integrated circuit design tools (ADS, Cadence, CST Microwave Studio, HFSS, etc.) is a strong plus. The successful candidate must start before the end of March 2018.
