The PhD project within the European project SUPER-G "Developing SUstainable PERmanent Grassland systems and policies" will focus on ecosystem services of permanent grassland systems in Europe, in particular on greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange and climate mitigation options. This PhD project will (1) quantify GHG budgets and - based on existing data - assess the resilience of Swiss grasslands against climate change; (2) maintain a N2O mitigation experiment on intensively managed grassland; and (3) synthesize existing studies in terms of climate change mitigation options. This project is carried out in a team with European colleagues, and is highly interdisciplinary. Tasks include literature synthesis; maintenance of a flux station at a N2O mitigation experiment (variation in legume cover) and analyses of meteo and flux data. In addition, participation in further synthesis efforts is envisaged, e.g. on relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning and services. Further Swiss project partners are located at ETH Zurich and Agroscope.

We are looking for a dynamic, reliable and highly motivated student with a M.Sc. degree in agricultural or environmental sciences, micrometeorology, physics or related disciplines. The applicant should have a strong interest in process and system oriented research and should enjoy field as well as computer work. Good statistics skills and experiences with large data sets are highly beneficial. Driving license and English language proficiency are required. The research will be carried out within a 3-year project, starting in May 2018.
