An initiative led by the Department of Earth Sciences is currently setting up a deep underground rock laboratory for research in the fields of geosciences and geo-energy. A series of experiments is being implemented with the activities of the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research (SCCER) in the Bedretto Underground Laboratory in the Central Swiss Alps.

The SCCER and the Geothermal Energy and Geofluids Group (GEG) at ETH Zürich jointly invites applicants for a 4-year PhD position in the area of geomechanics. The position is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

PhD position in Geomechanics in a multi-disciplinary Deep Underground Laboratory team (100%)

You will be part of an international, multidisciplinary team of researchers with various background in geosciences and geological engineering. Within the advertised position you will have the opportunity to contribute to the conception, planning, implementation and analysis of a variety of geomechanics field experiments tailored to enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and induced seismicity at the scale of an underground laboratory.

The successful candidate must hold a Master degree in Earth sciences, or related engineering fields (geotechnical, petroleum, mining, etc.) upon the start of the PhD program. We are looking for motivated individuals with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following: field and/or laboratory experiments, reservoir geomechanics, in situ stress, hydraulic fracturing, and hard rock rheology. Demonstrated interests in enhanced geothermal system and induced seismicity are desired.

The candidate should possess excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, be proficient in English, and have excellent writing and presentation skills. The candidate needs to function well both as a member of an interdisciplinary team and individually. The maximum duration of this position is four years, pending a successful completion of the Research Plan Defense after one year.
