Doctoral position in Developing Visual Expertise for Differential Diagnosis (100%)

The project is part of a larger goal to apply modern teaching and learning methods to design, implement and test innovative learning interventions in the new Bachelor’s programme in Human Medicine at ETH Zurich. A major problem in medical education is that even though students learn a substantial amount of content (theoretical) knowledge, they are often unable to retain it, let alone apply (or transfer) it in clinical settings. A major cause of this problem is the design of typical medical instruction itself, which relies heavily on a memorization- and rule-based knowledge acquisition approach. The intention of the project is to bring together advances in the sciences of learning to solve this problem. Specifically, research on learning from Productive Failure and Desirable Difficulties has demonstrated significant improvements in learning, especially in terms of improving deep understanding and transfer of knowledge. Thus, the focus will be on one of the key competencies expected of doctors - the development of visual expertise for differential diagnosis. The project leverages an interdisciplinary collaboration between learning scientists and medical lecturers and practitioners to: a) design innovative learning tools, materials and intervention for the development of visual expertise for differential diagnosis, and b) test them in controlled laboratory as well as classroom settings to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

We are looking for candidate with: a) a degree in medicine or a closely related field with an interest in learning sciences and instructional design. Candidates with a background in psychological or social sciences, but with a strong motivation for and interest in medical education are also welcome to apply; b) an interest in working in an interdisciplinary team and carrying out intervention studies; c) a fluent command of German and English; and d) familiarity with learning and social sciences research methods, although this is not essential, as training will be provided.
