Post-docs in the broad field of laser physics and optical design

The Galatea Lab at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Neuchâtel investigates the use of ultrafast lasers in the broad field of micro- and nano- technologies.

Intrinsically multidisciplinary, the team gathers scientists with expertise as diverse as materials science, mechanical engineering, physics and optics, with the common goal on one hand of understanding the interaction of femtosecond lasers with transparent materials, and on the other hand, of implementing these findings into innovative microengineering applications, such as new fabrication processes, novel optomechanical devices and platforms for integrated microoptics.

Your mission

As a post-doc having developed an expertise in laser physics, optical design or related fields, you will contribute to investigating innovative concepts of laser cavity, aiming at miniaturization and robust integration.

Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • As a member of the team working on optomechanical devices, your main task will be to contribute to investigating novel fabrication concepts of integrated laser cavities, bringing your expertise in optical design and laser physics. You will fabricate prototypes that you will test and characterize. (about 75% of the workload.)
  • Aside to your main task, you will support other team members in their own projects on a case-to-case basis and contribute to operational tasks of interest for the whole team. (about 25% of the workload)
  • You are expected to publish in high profile journals and to collaborate with other team members.

Your profile :
  • A PhD in optics, laser physics, or similar
  • Strong experimental skills
  • Proven ability to work in a team in an international, multidisciplinary environment
  • Some prior knowledge of one or more of the following topics would be an asset: femtosecond laser interaction with dielectrics, precision engineering and/or glass sciences.
