The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering performs international leading research on power electronic converter systems required for example in future energy distribution systems for integrating renewable energy sources or in traction applications / electric mobility. A further research focus is on solid state pulse modulators for medical applications (computer tomography/cancer treatment) and accelerators (CERN). For a new research project on the modelling and the optimisation of advanced magnetic devices for future highly efficient converter systems, we are recruiting a Ph.D. candidate.

Job description

We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated people interested in pursuing Ph.D. research in the multi-disciplinary and trendsetting area of modelling and optimising power electronic converters with the goal to design highly efficient and compact systems for example for integrating renewable energy sources in the grid, for electric mobility or for energy distribution. The focus in this project is on developing models for power semiconductor devices as for example IGBTs, SiC Mosfets or GaN HEMT, which allow to characterise the switching and conduction behaviour/losses. These models should be implemented in a computationally efficient way, so that they can be used in automated optimisation procedures and design tools of power electronic converters. For verifying the new models, you will design and build various prototype/test systems and evaluate them in detail by measurements under different operation conditions.

Your profile

The candidate must have a diploma/M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and/or physics with excellent grades, fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems, good communication skills, fluency in English and the willingness to fully commit yourself as part of an international team. In addition, you should be interested in the comprehensive modelling of power semiconductor devices as well as the basic function and the optimal design of power electronic.
