We now have an opportunity for a highly talented Scientific Data Analysis Group Leader to play a crucial role in the realisation of the future vision of Diamond.

Development of synchrotron technology proceeds at a blistering, relentless pace and requires cutting edge scientific software solutions to facilitate this critical work. With increasingly large and complex data sets it is essential that we enhance our data reduction and analysis solutions to fully support both current and future needs.

This role will be responsible for leading and managing the Data Analysis Group, and providing overall technical direction and advances in data reduction and data analysis software and services.

You will ensure that Diamond can provide innovative solutions that meet our organisation’s scientific requirements with the necessary usability, technical stability and scalability.

You will be responsible, along with other group leaders, for leading in the development, implementation and management of a medium-term strategic software development plan for data analysis that meets the needs of the Diamond user community, and ensures Diamond remains world leading and competitive on the international stage.

You will also carry out aspects of scientific engagement, software project management, and giving leadership to meet overall business objectives.

The role will require occasional UK and overseas travel including some overnight stays.


You should have a First Degree in Engineering or Science, with a PhD in Science desirable.

We are searching for a scientist with extensive experience in developing and supporting scientific software, ideally in a large facility environment. You will have experience of interacting with scientist to gather software requirements and interests and building coherent lists for their delivery.

Understanding of the scientific techniques applied at a similar large scientific facility, and their data reduction analysis needs, will be beneficial.

You will demonstrate experience of modern software project management techniques and tools, along with experience of object orientated languages such as Java, C, C++ and Python, with experience of Unix-like operating systems and their administration desirable.

You will be an experienced line manager, with the ability to lead, motivate and develop a team, along with experience in managing significant projects, co-ordinating resources and managing budgets.

You will display excellent communication, interpersonal and presentational skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff and stakeholders at all levels.
