PhD and post-doctoral positions

Computational biology

Ref. 2020_038

Project description

Several PhD and postdoc research positions are available at IBM Research Europe Laboratory in Zurich, within the group of computational biology . The main focus is the application of AI techniques with a special emphasis on the investigation of interpretable approaches for deep learning in computational biology. Such approaches can be intrinsically transparent, e.g. by developing models that enforce constraints to render the model interpretable, or post-hoc, i.e. by applying methods that analyze the model’s behavior after training is already complete.

A major focus would be the application of such models to single-cell data, such as single-cell proteomics (CyTOF) in collaboration with the Bodenmiller lab and single-cell drug screenings, in collaboration with the Snijder lab . In addition, multi-modal models that aim to combine disparate data types will be developed with the goal of developing a comprehensive molecular classifier in colorectal cancer, as well as predicting response to therapy. This latter line of work will exploit ongoing work at IBM on multi-modal deep learning approaches for drug modelling (https://www.?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> An additional postdoc position will be focused on developing HPC and AI approaches to accelerate cell-level simulations.

The successful candidate will work in a highly interdisciplinary team and be supported by the rich AI community assembled at IBM Research, Zurich. Candidates should have a strong background in computer science, mathematics or physics and be interested in cancer-related research. Strong programming skills are necessary. Experience in mathematical modelling, statistics, probability and machine learning and/or deep learning are especially welcome.

About the group

The group of systems biology at IBM aims to develop new mathematical and computational approaches for the analysis and exploitation of the latest generation of biomedical data. In the context of cancer, the group focuses on the development of computational and statistical approaches to unravel cancer molecular mechanisms using high-throughput multi-omics datasets and single-cell molecular data. A major interest is the development of artificial intelligence approaches for personalized medicine and drug modelling, activities that have been supported by two H2020 consortia: PrECISE (2015-18) and iPC (2019-22).

IBM is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us you will find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent, flexible working arrangements enable all genders to strike the desired balance between their professional development and their personal lives.
