"DAYLIGHT FELLOWS" - Two postdoctoral positions in researching daylight perspectives in sustainable urban and architectural design for the built environment (m/f/d)
The Department of Architecture (D-ARCH) and VELUX STIFTUNG are launching two postdoctoral positions for 18 months in researching daylight perspectives in sustainable urban and architectural Design. The first DAYLIGHT Fellow will start by January 2021 and the second Fellow by February 2022.
It is a cooperation between three domains within D-ARCH: The Institute of Landscape and Urban Studies (LUS), Chair of Architecture and Urban Design, Prof. Hubert Klumpner / ETH CASE Centre for Research on Architecture, Society & the Built Environment (LUS), Dr. Marie Glaser / Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), Chair of Architecture and Building Systems, Prof. Arno Schlüter.
The two “DAYLIGHT FELLOW” positions are a postdoc program for daylight and the built environment at the D-ARCH and a new initiative at ETH Zurich supported by VELUX STIFTUNG . The fellowship establishes an interdisciplinary knowledge incubator connecting international researchers in daylight and the built environment with the department’s ongoing leading research platforms established in the related field. The “DAYLIGHT FELLOW” program explores and develops a long-term basis for researching daylight perspectives into a more sustainable urban- and architectural design future.
Applicants are showing their capacity to advance daylight research, technology, and integration into architecture- and urban design. The “DAYLIGHT FELLOWS” launch and pursue research that bridges research in daylight, urban planning, and building technologies. The Daylight Fellowship research is focusing on questions of urban design, innovative technological solutions for better daylight use to support living qualities, caring for wellbeing, comfort, and health. The fellows will work in an environment with an interdisciplinary group of D-ARCH researchers generating scientific and technological solutions for concrete applications, researching selected case-study city districts.
Interested “DAYLIGHT FELLOW” candidates hold a Ph.D. in architecture, civil engineering or in a related field, with a focus on daylight research and applications. They have knowledge and experience in fields such as daylight engineering and simulation, light technology, lighting and photometry (use and application of modeling and simulation frameworks) in combination with fields of application such as urban studies, environmental sciences, cognitive science and psychology. Their passion for daylight, architectural and Urban Design, and the development of the built environment is allowing them to connect with the research groups at D-ARCH.
The applicants are demonstrating their performance in conducting high-quality research by publications in refereed international peer-reviewed journals, independent book contributions and exhibitions. We expect successful applicants to independently conduct advanced academic and policy-relevant research and contribute to the groups’ ongoing research projects at LUS and ITA. Candidates are experienced and feel inspired by working in interdisciplinary constellations. Fluent written and verbal communication in English is mandatory. German skills are welcome.

The research plan provides the basis for scientific evaluation, particularly of the quality of the proposed research, i.e., its scientific relevance, topicality, originality, feasibility and the suitability of its methods. Together with the CV and the candidate’s track record, the research plan also serves as a basis for assessing the candidate’s scientific qualifications, particularly his/her expertise concerning the “Daylight Fellowship” program. The plan should contain statements of interest to collaborate with specific groups or labs at D-ARCH, a time plan for the research intended and a description of the intended outcome and form of publication. The research plan must consist of the original text. A limited amount of text (or other material, graphs, etc.) by third parties/partnerships or text published by the applicant himself/herself is permissible in the sections concerning the state of research and his/her personal research as well as when describing standard methods.
A jury from LUS and ITA Institutes at D-ARCH along with international experts will interview selected candidates assessing the candidates’ quality of the past and the proposed Daylight research.
Final Selection interviews will take place in coordination with the applicants starting in mid-November 2020.
