The Department for Simulation of Solids and Structures of the Institute of Materials Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht offers a PhD Position (m/f/d) in the area of computational materials science with specialization on coupled multi-scale problems. The position is funded by the DFG Collaborative Research Center "SFB 986: Tailor-Made Multi-Scale Materials Systems - M3" and initially limited to three years.

HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). Around 1,000 employees carry out basic research and development work in close cooperation with national and international research institutions, research-oriented clinics and economic and public institutions.

At the Institute of Materials Research some 200 scientists conduct research in the five sub-institutes "Materials Mechanics", "Materials Physics", "Materials Technology", "Magnesium Innovation Centre MagIC" and "Metallic Biomaterials".


  • micromechanical simulation of the thermomechanical behavior of hierarchical ceramic-polymer composite materials
  • development of material models for the nonlinear time- and temperature-dependent behavior of the constituents of the composites
  • development of homogenization strategies for successful modeling of hierarchical materials
  • process modeling involving very large deformations of the material, fracture, and viscous material behavior using meshfree computational methods such as SPH or peridynamics
  • validation of the models, additional identification of model parameters based on micro-scale experiments and experimental characterization methods in cooperation with other projects in the SFB 986
  • publication and presentation of your scientific results in international scientific journals and at international conferences and workshops


  • master’s degree in computational engineering, mechanical engineering, computational materials science/engineering, materials science
  • excellent knowledge of relevant theoretical foundations (materials science, computational mechanics)
  • significant experience in the development of numerical methods (FEM, SPH etc.) is highly appreciated
  • excellent programming skills in C++, Python
  • commitment and passion for performing high-quality research
  • excellent communication skills in English
  • ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists
