PhD position in Distributed Computing

The Distributed Computing Group is a research group at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, ETH Zurich. We are about fifteen members.

We are interested in a variety of research topics. Generally we are trying to work on new and upcoming areas off the beaten paths. Our three main areas of research are unconventional algorithms, distributed systems, and novel models in machine learning. For example, we work on these projects: financial network analysis, extrapolation in graph neural networks, blockchains without consensus, novel forms of digital democracy, and printable money. In our group we try to apply and unite the approaches and techniques of theory and practice. Some members of our group focus on algorithms and mathematical proofs, some on system design and building.

We are looking for a new member with a strong academic background, and an excellent Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field from a renowned university. A candidate should be attracted by and proficient in one or two of these areas: approximation algorithms, complexity theory, online computation, probabilistic algorithms, graph theory, learning theory, deep neural networks, reinforcement learning, symbolic artificial intelligence, distributed systems, software engineering, hardware/software design. A new group member can choose and shape a project according to their interests and talents within the first months of employment. Successful candidates are expected to work towards a doctoral degree, and participate in the teaching activities of the group.

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. We are renowned for our excellent education, cutting-edge fundamental research and direct transfer of new knowledge into society. Over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries find our university to be a place that promotes independent thinking and an environment that inspires excellence. Located in the heart of Europe, yet forging connections all over the world, we work together to develop solutions for the global challenges of today and tomorrow.
