DescriptionIn der aktuellen Covid-19 Situation laufen die Rekrutierungen weiter. Es kann dabei allerdings zu Verzögerungen kommen. Vielen Dank für Ihr Verständnis. ETH Zurich is one of the world's leading universities specializing in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. You will be part of the Chair of Mathematical and Physical Geodesy , which is active in research concerning applications of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for Earth monitoring and their integration with other observation techniques in a trans-disciplinary context, as well as in gravity field measurements and local gravity field determination. The professorship Mathematical and Physical Geodesy (Prof. Markus Rothacher) in the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry, solicits applications for a position to be filled by a PhD candidate. In the framework of the Future Circular Collider (FCC), a new particle accelerator in the planning stage at CERN, we are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to work on the project "Determination of a high-precision gravity field model for the FCC region and improvement of the Geodetic Reference Frames and the Geodetic Infrastructure". This project is a collaboration between the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (ETH), the Federal Office of Topography swisstopo, the Institute of Territorial Engineering (HEIG-VD) and CERN. It is divided into two parts, the gravity field determination and the reference frames/infrastructure. The position is devoted to the work in physical geodesy or, more precisely, to the challenging goal of studying concepts, methods and validation approaches for the establishment of a new very precise gravity field model in the region of the FCC and its initial realization. Applicants should have a master degree in geodesy, physics or a related field. The successful candidate will have strong analytical skills, and experience in physical geodesy, data processing and programming. Some background in both, gravimetry and geoid determination would be ideal for this PhD position. Knowledge of the English language is mandatory, knowledge of German is a plus. Good interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team of researchers and students are expected. The position is open now, with an appointment for 4 years. Selection will start immediately and continue until the position is filled. ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. We are renowned for our excellent education, cutting-edge fundamental research and direct transfer of new knowledge into society. Over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries find our university to be a place that promotes independent thinking and an environment that inspires excellence. Located in the heart of Europe, yet forging connections all over the world, we work together to develop solutions for the global challenges of today and tomorrow.
