The Department of Environmental Toxicology (Utox) has a vacancy for a
PhD Position in Microbial Community Ecotoxicology
The position is part of our research on stream biofilms. The aim of the project is to investigate how diatom species that compose biofilms respond to pesticide pollution in Swiss watercourses and to identify taxa that are specifically sensitive or tolerant to these pesticides. Ultimately, these taxa will be used to develop a specific diatom index for pesticides that can be implemented in practice for evaluating the ecological status of streams. These questions will be addressed by combining experimental channel studies under controlled conditions, field surveys and computational modelling approaches.
We are looking for a motivated candidate with a master in environmental toxicology, ecology, microbiology or similar. Prior experience in working with microbial communities and/or phototrophic organisms would be a valuable asset. We offer a very dynamic and collaborative research environment, which profits from state-of-the-art infrastructure and support. This project is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Environmental Toxicology and Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling with funding provided by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment.
