A scientific assistant/postdoc position in Composite Metamaterials Processing is available in the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures (CMASLab) at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT).


Project background


CMASLab is interested in developing scalable technologies for lightweight carbon fiber hinges for space applications. To further improve the lightweight potential of such solutions, smart actuation is of interest to replace traditional actuators. This project is in the framework of an Innosuisse project in collaboration with ClearSpace SA, Micro Cameras & Space Exploration SA, and HEIG-VD.


Job description


The objective of the project is the development of a deployable inspection arm for a space debris removal mission sanctioned by ESA, with a planned launch in 2025. The work will produce a demonstration model followed by an engineering model over two years. The focus will lie on structural concepts for a deployable and reconfigurable boom using lightweight carbon fiber composites and smart material actuation. The design will be tested to verify mechanical and environmental requirements. The work may be supported by a doctoral position.


Your profile


To strengthen our international and interdisciplinary research team, we are looking for an outstanding candidate with a degree in engineering (mechanical, aerospace) or an equivalent research related field. Applicants should have a strong background in fiber reinforced polymer composites as well as experience with their fabrication. Furthermore, applicants with experience in smart material actuation are sought. Applicants should be interested in a combined experimental and numerical approach to the research. Prospective candidates will be part of an international and interdisciplinary research team and expected to be highly motivated as well as passionate about science.
