The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institution dedicated to improving global health through excellence in research, education and services. The Department of Medical Parasitology and Infection Biology (MPI) of Swiss TPH conducts basic and translational research in infection biology with a particular focus on poverty-related infectious diseases. Within the MPI Department the Malaria Host Interactions laboratory of Nicolas Brancucci studies how the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum manages to adapt to different environments.

This PhD position is part of a research project on environmental sensing funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In this project, we want to elucidate the molecular mechanisms intra-erythrocytic parasites employ to sense environmental changes and how this information is translated into cellular responses using CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing approaches.


You should have the following experiences and skills:

  • MSc degree in the molecular life sciences
  • Skills in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, cell culture
  • Experience in basic malaria research is beneficial but not mandatory
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills in written and spoken English
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
