The Nanophotonic Systems Laboratory (Pr. Romain Quidant) at ETH Zurich is searching for a Ph.D student to work on heat control on the microscale and its application to the development of novel reconfigurable planar optical elements for imaging.

In the Nanophotonic Systems Laboratory , we exploit our advanced control of light-matter interaction at the nanometer scale as a key enabling tool to address scientific and technological challenges over a broad range of fields. Our research is interdisciplinary and brings together a unique combination of expertise and skills with talented international members with diverse academic backgrounds.


Project background


Losses in metals have long been considered as a major issue in science and technology, and over the years, disciplines like photonics and electronics have put extensive efforts to reduce their impact on device performances. Here, we embrace a new paradigm, where heat generation in metals becomes an enabling tool, relevant to a wide range of applications rather than a limitation. In this context, we have developed an extensive toolbox to engineer heat generation at the nano- and micro-scale, either optically (Thermoplasmonics) or electrically. We utilize tunable optical properties of a thermo-optical material to engineer free form and tunable optical elements. This project envisages the extension of this smart approach towards real life applications like bio-imaging through controlled design of the thermal field.


Job description


We are searching for a talented, creative, and motivated PhD candidate to work on the electrical control of the thermal landscape and its applications to imaging. Main tasks include:

  • To design, fabricate and characterize electrical and optical micro- and nanosystems
  • To develop optical set-ups
  • To interact with collaborators from other fields
  • To write publications and promote the results at international conferences

Your profile


Essential background and profile:

  • A Master’s degree in physics or engineering with an excellent academic track record.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently in an academically diverse environment.

Knowledge in any of the following areas is an advantage:

  • Photonics, design of electronic circuits, numerical simulations, microfabrication
