Scientific Technical Assistant For the Swiss ACTRIS Cloud In-Situ Ice Nucleation Monitoring Network

We are looking for a scienific/technical assistant for a 2 years fixed term position with a potential to renew for another 2 years based on funding and performance. The position is funded through the Swiss Government arm of the ACTRIS network for Cloud in-situ measurements. The work will entail, data analysis, technical instrumentation maintenance and repair as well as some travel for project meetings and to field sites.


Project background


The Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) has funded the participation of Switzerland in the Cloud-insitu network of the European Aerosol, Cloud and Trace gasses Research Infrastructure ( ACTRIS ) network. ACTRIS is a pan-European research infrastructure producing high-quality data and information on short-lived atmospheric constituents and on the processes leading to the variability of these constituents in natural and controlled atmospheres. The Cloud-insitu part pertaining to the current project, focusses on cloud parameters and aerosol-cloud parameters that impact ice cloud formation. The primary goal of ACTRIS is to produce high-quality integrated datasets in the area of atmospheric sciences and provide services, including access to instrumented platforms, tailored for scientific and technological usage. The data sets are usually produced for specified parameters that are compulsory in order to be an ACTRIS certified field site. In the context of the current project, these parameters are cloud droplet effective radius and a recommended parameter is concentration of ice nucleating particles. Currently 22 European countries are part of ACTRIS. The focus of the job advertised will be to peform all tasks related to monitoring of these parameters, quality control and assurance to ensure high quality data over the next 2-4 years so that the field sites in Switzerland are fully incorporated into the ACTRIS network.


Job description


  • Research instrument installation, maintenance, calibration and repair of ice nucleation particle counters at two field sites in Switzerland (Payerne and Jungfraujoch). For Jungfraujoch, ability to work for 2-3 days at a time at high altitudes (3500 m a. s. l) should be possible.
  • Laboratory experiments with ice nucleating chambers to develop calibration protocols and standard operation procedures (SOP). Writing and developing SOPs
  • Monitoring data quality control and assurance, correcting for interferences in data. Routine data analysis and responsible for disseminating data to the scientific community for use in research.
  • Database management to ensure metadata and correct data format criteria are met for submission of data from Swiss field sites to ACTRIS
  • To attend project meetings and calibration workshops (which will include travel to Germany, and othe EU countries) for instrument calibration and ACTRIS cloud in-situ meetings
  • Prepare annual reports to submit to SERI (State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation)

Your profile


  • A Masters in Science or equivalent experience in a technical or natureal science field
  • Experience in working with aerosol instruments in a laboratory and field setting
  • Experience with data analysis and programming software - strong preference for Python
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English
  • Technical skills in the laboratory to deal with communication between hardware and software
