The Leibniz-Institut DSMZ-Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH, Braunschweig, Germany, offers a position as
Bioinformatician / Research Software Engineer (m/f/d)
in full time. The position is not suitable for part-time work. The position is part of the NFDI4Microbiota project (https://nfdi4microbiota.de/) and is initially limited to 3 years. In case of positive evaluation, this position can be extended accordingly. The salary-level is based on pay group E 13 TV-L.

Background:
As part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI, ?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nfdi.de%2F)&module=jobs&id=54030" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">https://www.nfdi.de/), NFDI4Microbiota is being developed as a central hub in Germany that supports the microbiology research community with access to data, analytical services, standards, training and education. The mission is to help microbiology researchers translate research data into a better understanding of microbial species and their interactions at molecular level.

Description

"Is the bacterium in my lab the same bacterium as in the database?".

Microbiological research lacks unique, persistent identifiers (PIDs) for microbial strains, such as the existing ones for researchers (ORCID), publications (DOI) or sequences in databases (INSDC). Instead, bacteria are identified by sometimes highly redundant designations. The task is to build a new database starting from existing identifiers such as those used in strain collections or sequence databases. The database will act as a data warehouse, collecting information from different sources, bringing it together in a structured way, and thereby enabling information from different sources to be easily linked. This new database will be closely connected to already established databases at the DSMZ (BacDive and LPSN), but also to external databases such as the large sequence databases. Furthermore, as a service of NFDI4Microbiota, this database will be integrated into a central web platform.
