Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
In the Department of Environmental Chemistry at Eawag there is a position opening for a
Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Data Analysis (2 years)
In this project, you will analyze long-term time series of a large number of water contaminants (target and non-target analytes) that are measured daily by high resolution mass spectrometry at the International Rhine Monitoring Station at Basel. You will use state-of-the-art statistical methods to identify clusters of contaminants originating from similar sources and/or undergoing similar fate processes. Based on these results, and in close cooperation with the involved Swiss and German authorities (BAFU, AUE Basel-Stadt, LUBW), the project team will derive recommendations on measures to improve surveillance strategies and reduce contaminant loads in the Rhine catchment.
Requirements: Candidates for this position are expected to hold a PhD in data sciences as applied to environmental systems (or vice versa, a PhD in environmental systems engineering with a data science focus). Candidates with additional knowledge in environmental and analytical chemistry, particularly high resolution mass spectrometry, and working experience in time series analysis will be preferred. Candidates are expected to have excellent academic records and good communication skills in English and, ideally, also in German. Eagerness to demonstrate self-initiative, particularly in interacting with the members of the team as well as the involved national and cantonal authorities, is required for this position.
Benefits: The project will be led by Heinz Singer and co-led by Kathrin Fenner, two group leaders at the Department of Environmental Chemistry at Eawag. Both PIs maintain strong interactions with various groups at the University of Zürich and ETH Zürich. Both Eawag and the two universities are located within the Zürich metropolitan area. The city of Zürich is continuously ranked among the top cities in the world for quality of life and is within close proximity to the Swiss Alps. The position is funded for a 2-year period with an attractive remuneration package. The preferred start date is beginning of 2022. The project will offer close collaboration with Swiss and German environmental authorities as well as with researchers of other European universities.
