Organic Chemistry for Autonomous Lab Development and Operation

A PhD or post-doc position is available for candidates with Organic Chemistry background and interest in machine learning and automation. The candidate will join the very dynamic group of Accelerated Discovery at IBM Research in Zurich that is embedded in a strong, worldwide IBM AI science community. AI applied to Chemistry and Material Science will have profound impacts on Industries, increasing the efficiency in R&D processes and accelerating the development and adoption of sustainable solutions. Our team pushes this frontier with a culture of innovation and interdisciplinarity focusing on the creation and consumption of high quality science. We are looking for candidates who will drive the development of the current autonomous laboratory for chemical synthesis forward and be in charge of its operation.
All digital contributions will be made world-wide available through the Digital Chemistry platform , openly accessible world-wide to students, academics and industries.

Qualifications

• A Master’s degree or PhD degree in organic chemistry, with a sincere interest in automation, machine learning, data science, computer science.
• Prior experience with chemical automation platforms is essential.
• Prior expertise in machine learning and data models.
• Programming skills in Python.
• High amount of creativity and outstanding problem-solving ability.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with relevant machine learning libraries (TensorFlow/PyTorch, the python scientific stack).
• Familiarity with version control, for example git.
• Excellent oral and written English with good presentation skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication.
