Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (tenure track) of Early Childhood Education and Care/Childhood Studies

The holder of this position will play a key role in meeting the increasing demand for research in the area of early childhood education and care. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to research in the framework of quality development initiatives in early childhood of the Ministry of National Education (MENJE), as well as providing scientific advice and social reporting on, e.g., the living conditions and well-being of children in Luxembourg. The holder will further continue the successful and established collaboration with various national stakeholders and further develop third-party funded policy-relevant research projects. Other activities will include contributions to the national childhood report.

Teaching areas

The holder of this position will take on teaching responsibilities at the Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral level. The main teaching obligations will be in the “Bachelor en Sciences de l’Education” and the “Bachelor en Sciences Sociales et Educatives”. Modules on childhood, as well as early childhood education and care form a central strand of these programmes. The candidate will further develop these modules in close collaboration with the directors of the study programmes, adapting to international and national professional discourses and needs. A secondary teaching responsibility pertains to the “Master in Management and Coaching in the Educational and Social Domain” and the “Master in Social Sciences and Educational Sciences” as well as to the Doctoral School.

• Assistant Professor (tenure track): Fixed Term Contract

The position is offered at the Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (tenure track) level, depending on qualification. At Associate Professor level the position is tenured. At Assistant Professor level, tenure may be granted after 5 years upon positive evaluation.

• D. in Educational Science, Sociology, or in a related discipline;
• A minimum of three years of post-doctoral experience acquired in a university or comparable research centre;
• An appropriate international research profile as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, conference participation, and collaboration in international research initiatives; and
• University-level teaching experience at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level.
• A strong interest in bridging theory and practice, bringing academic excellence to addressing local issues with practitioners;
• A research profile related to educational science or sociology with a focus on early childhood and preschool learning and training;
• Expertise in methodologies for assessment and evaluation;
• Expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Language requirements

The University of Luxembourg is set in a multilingual context. The person hired on this position must be proficient in English and either French or German. The University encourages its staff to learn the other language and provides access to language courses to this end.
