Research Scientist: Wheat Breeding and Genetics 1

Plant breeding is a key element of top-quality and competitive agricultural production. Productive, disease-resistant varieties that are adapted to local conditions form the basis of sustainable and resource-friendly plant production. In collaboration with national and international partners, the Research group ’Field Crop Breeding and Genetic Resources’ develops competitive breeding programmes for wheat and soybean and for the preservation, characterization and enhancement of genetic resources. The most advanced breeding technologies are constantly implemented into the breeding programmes. Your experience, professional skills and creativity will allow you to be the successful candidate and contribute to the future successes of the Group.

About us

Agroscope is the Swiss Confederation’s centre of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector. Research is carried out at various sites in Switzerland. Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld. Agroscope is affiliated to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.

Description

  • Scientific and technical conduct of wheat breeding projects with a focus on the winter-wheat programme. Ensuring competitive variety development according to the objectives of the programme and in collaboration with our national and international partners
  • Participating to the development and implementing next-generation wheat breeding, incorporating cutting-edge genetic, genomic, statistical, phenotyping and AI technologies and tools
  • Acquisition and supervision of research projects at national and international level; knowledge transfer; publication of scientific articles
  • Proactive support for implementing the relocation of the ’Wheat Improvement and Breeding’ Team from Nyon to Zurich-Reckenholz (planned for March 2025 onwards)

Requirements

  • University degree with a PhD and established scientific background in the Group’s field of research: genetics and plant breeding (ideally wheat breeding), plant biotechnology, genome selection (GS)
  • Hands-on experience in plant breeding
  • National and international network in the research field
  • Good leadership and communication skills
  • Good knowledge of two official Swiss languages. Very good written and spoken English
