Postdoctoral position at EPFL PV-Lab: development of highly-efficient, sustainable and scalable silicon solar cells for application in perovskite-on-silicon tandem devices


Your mission :

The energy transition is ongoing and the deployment of silicon-based photovoltaic capacity is growing fast. This position is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the ongoing activities around silicon photovoltaics in Neuchâtel, in the frame of common projects and partnerships between the laboratory of photovoltaics and thin-films electronics (PV-Lab) of EPFL and the Sustainable energy center of CSEM.
Your mission will be to work on the development of next-generation silicon-based solar cells demonstrating high-efficiency, low carbon footprint and high potential for scalability to industrial manufacturing. More specifically, in the frame of a nationally funded project, you will work on the development of novel solutions to optimize the performance and processing of silicon solar cells in view of their integration as bottom sub cell in perovskite-on-silicon tandem devices. In that frame, you will work in connection with different teams of PV-Lab and CSEM working on high-efficiency silicon solar cells and perovskite-on-silicon tandem devices, respectively.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

You will develop silicon-based thin films by means of Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) to improve the performance of silicon-based solar cells. This activity includes the evaluation and optimization of the layers- functional properties (namely, surface passivation provided to the silicon substrate, electrical transport within the layer and optical transparency) on test samples followed by the integration of optimized materials in full solar cell devices
You will communicate the research performed and key results achieved at internal meetings as well as at national and international conferences and through written publications in high-impact scientific journals
You will actively participate in brainstorming the group-s vision and strategy for the development of highly-efficient, stable, scalable silicon-based solar cells with low carbon footprint
You will participate in the coordination of a research team of about 6-7 persons (including yourself) to ensure that the project-s objectives described in the work program are addressed appropriately and achieved on time
You will participate in the communication with funding bodies to report on projects- developments and key results

Your profile :

  • PhD in photonics, semiconductor physics, electrical engineering or closely related field with high academic record indicated by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and international conferences
  • Proven experience of working in a cleanroom environment
  • Knowledge and proven experience in the fabrication and characterization of silicon-based thin films by PECVD for optoelectronic applications
  • Knowledge and experience in the fabrication and characterization of silicon solar cells with special focus on the development of passivating contacts based on amorphous or polycrystalline silicon thin films
  • Knowledge of the current state-of-the-art silicon solar cell technologies and associated latest developments
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) to synthetize and report on the research activities performed and key results achieved to different target audiences (e.g., to colleagues at periodic meetings, peers at international scientific conferences, funding bodies)
  • Independence, creativity and strong analytical capacity for solving technical problems and driving technological developments
  • Open, collaborative and result-oriented mindset
  • Knowledge and experience in project management
  • Knowledge and experience in team management and coordination is a plus
