ENAC - Ph.D. Position in Modeling Human Thermoregulation (ICE)

The Laboratory of Integrated Comfort Engineering (ICE)  at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne  (EPFL) is seeking a highly motivated and talented Ph.D. candidate to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of personalized human thermoregulation modeling. The primary objective of this Ph.D. position is to advance the field of human thermoregulation modeling through the lens of personalization. The project will specifically concentrate on enhancing existing common thermoregulation models (e.g., JOS-3) by integrating a robust data-driven approach. By tailoring these models to individual physiological responses, we aim to achieve a nuanced understanding of how unique factors influence human thermoregulation in various environments. The position is fully funded for 4 years.

The requirements for the qualification of candidates:

  • Ms in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, and similar fields
  • Strong background in mathematical modeling, data analytics, and programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
  • Experience in implementing data-driven modeling techniques and utilizing machine learning algorithms to analyze complex datasets
  • Expertise in conducting numerical simulations to model three-dimensional and transient heat transfer phenomena
  • Experience in conducting human experimental research studies, including the collection and analysis of physiological measurements
  • Familiarity with existing common thermoregulation models
  • Familiarity with the human cardiovascular and thermoregulatory systems (physiological mechanisms underlying temperature regulation and their implications for human comfort and health)
  • Openness to acquiring new knowledge and skills, a passion for interdisciplinary research
  • Team spirit and capacity to conduct computational and experimental research
  • Fluency in English and comfortable level of French or German
