Swissnex is the global network connecting Switzerland and the world in education, research and innovation. Its mission is to support the outreach and active engagement of its partners in the international exchange of knowledge, ideas and talent. In 2021, Swissnex organized over 190 events and activities in collaboration with Swiss and international partners. It also supported 58 of Switzerland’s most promising start-ups in their internationalization journeys. The annual report of 2021 looks back at the wide range of activities run by Swissnex, across its six main locations and 21 Science Counselors in Swiss embassies all around world. By further exploring the possibilities of physical, hybrid and online activities, Swissnex promoted the exchange between a broad range of players from the public and private sectors in different fields, which are of relevance to the Swiss education, research and innovation (ERI) landscape. By doing so, it-s contributing to further strengthen Switzerland’s bilateral relations worldwide.
Swissnex in Boston organized a two-week online course on science diplomacy with attendees from 13 different countries. Swissnex in China facilitated new initiatives in Energy and Deeptech, including the Sino-Swiss Energy Innovation Forum. Swissnex in India conducted a study on the impact of Covid-19 on science communication. A storytelling Camp, a hybrid education program held in Locarno, was co-organized by Swissnex in San Francisco. And by joining the global nextrends platform, Swissnex in Brazil reported on tomorrow’s relevant ERI trends, bringing Brazil a step closer to Switzerland.
Swissnex was also involved in the Expo 2020 world exhibition in Dubai, which has been postponed to 2021. Over the course of six months, Swissnex helped forge new ties between ERI stakeholders from Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East. As part of the Swiss Pavilion, Swissnex hosted 40 events together with higher education institutions, research organizations, companies - particularly Start-ups - to showcase Switzerland’s Education, Research and Innovation landscape and success stories, such as the Swiss Vocational and Professional Education and Training system.
Announcement of the new Swiss Consulate in Osaka and Swissnex in Japan Another highlight was the announcement of the creation of a new Consulate in Osaka and Swissnex in Japan. The Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe triangle is not only the home to renowned universities, but also to leading global companies such as Panasonic, Takeda, Nintendo and Toyota. This new Swissnex location in the highly dynamic Kansai region will support the already strong Swiss-Japanese collaboration and partnerships in the ERI sector and tap in the existing potential for further collaboration. Swissnex in Japan will also offer Innosuisse Start-up internationalization camps, and also help pave the way for Switzerland’s presence at the upcoming World Expo 2025 in Osaka.
