Advance your personal and academic development with a semester abroad
On the occasion of the "International Week", students of the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons can find out about a semester abroad at market stands. They benefit from input from former semester abroad students and can ask international students about their experiences in Chur. Over the past 20 years, almost 800 FHGR students have completed a semester abroad, while the University of Applied Sciences has welcomed 400 international students.
Njaal Aase, Digital Business Management student, spent a semester abroad in Norway at Oslo Metropolitan University. "The stay at the host university was not only an enriching cultural experience for me, but also contributed significantly to my personal and academic development." He is not alone in this, as around fifty students from the UAS Grisons spend a semester at another university every year. Since 2004, when student mobility was launched, almost 800 FHGR students have spent a semester abroad.
The International Office of the UAS Grisons supports these so-called "outgoing" students with the organization and looks after the "incoming" students during their stay at the UAS Grisons. To date, around 400 international students have come to Chur for an exchange semester. In addition to the support provided by the International Office, the student association ESN Chur (Erasmus Student Network) has been contributing to the successful semester abroad experience of international students at the UAS Grisons for ten years. "During my time abroad, I realized how important it is to feel at home and that the local people have a big influence on this. That’s why I’ve been increasingly involved in ESN since then, both here and at a national level," says Leonie Leuenberger, tourism student and board member of ESN Chur and ESN Switzerland, describing her commitment. Two semesters abroad took her to Guelph University in Canada and the University of the Balearic Islands in Spain.
"My exchange year in Australia in 2004 was a formative experience from which I have benefited ever since. As Director of Studies, it was particularly important to me to integrate international experience into my studies," says Armando Schär, Vice-Rector of the UAS Grisons. In his current role, he is responsible for the internationalization of education at the UAS Grisons and is looking forward to creating even more formative experiences for students in the future. For student mobility, the UAS Grisons maintains partnerships with 56 universities in 23 countries, mainly in the EU. In addition to traditional exchange semesters, the degree programs offer numerous mobility opportunities, including a double degree program with Australia and Germany, a summer school in Croatia and various study trips and internships abroad.
