As part of the interdisciplinary elective "Sustainable World: a Climate for Change - Liechtenstein as Global Laboratory for Innovation" by Prof. em. Peter Droege, three public lecture events will be held at the University of Liechtenstein. The second lecture will be given by Panagiotis Potolidis-Beck from the Office of Foreign Affairs Liechtenstein (AAA) on 26 October 2022.
The aim of the lecture series is to share with the public the teaching content of the University of Liechtenstein on the topic of sustainability. Various aspects of sustainability and sustainable development are conveyed to students and interested parties in order to show the difference of superficial "green washing" from fundamental changes based on natural values and long-term investments.
"International Programs for Sustainable Development"
In his presentation, Panagiotis Potolidis-Beck describes and discusses the broad international spectrum and core programs of the Office of Foreign Affairs in relation to sustainability and sustainable development.
In the first part of his presentation, the Head of the Department for Economic Affairs and Development explains the foreign policy priorities of his activities, in particular the areas in which the Office is active and how these contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also gives an overview of the history of the SDGs and Liechtenstein’s contribution to the negotiation of the SDGs, which were adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015. All 193 states of the United Nations agreed on this plan, more precisely the document "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development", a global plan to promote sustainable peace and prosperity and to protect our planet. The 17 main goals and 169 sub-goals address all dimensions of sustainability - so there are environmental as well as social and economic goals.
In the second part, Potolidis-Beck presents Liechtenstein’s "International Humanitarian Cooperation and Development" (IHCD), which is the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and coordinated by the Office of Foreign Affairs. It encompasses the entire humanitarian and development engagement of the State of Liechtenstein. IHCD works in four categories: Emergency and Reconstruction Assistance, International Refugee and Migration Assistance, and Bilateral and Multilateral Development Cooperation.
