Two Master’s students in Computer Science at ETH founded a start-up to offer high-quality, one-on-one online tutoring at affordable rates.

How do you simplify fractions? And what about multiplying two-digit numbers? Many children need additional help to understand and apply mathematical concepts. But parents of school-age children are often out of their depth - and private tutors can be prohibitively expensive.

Enter Friedrich Wicke and Gero Embser, Master’s students in Computer Science at ETH. In 2024, they founded the start-up Sophia Edu Labs to offer high-quality, one-on-one online tutoring at affordable rates. The platform creates personalised exercises based on the child’s school year. The pupil then works through the exercises online, directing any questions to the AI tutor and getting individual feedback - almost as if they were interacting with a real person.
