Marco Rupprich is the new head of the Institute for Ecopreneurship and research group leader for Sustainable Chemistry and Circular Economy at the FHNW School of Life Sciences.

Rupprich will become a member of the university management and will take over from Christoph Hugi, who has headed the institute ad-interim for the past two years, from October 1, 2024. In addition to his work in an environmental analysis company, Marco Rupprich completed his studies in chemistry with a subsequent doctorate in radiochemistry. As part of his scientific work at the MCI in Innsbruck, he established the research area of process engineering, with a focus on water treatment using membrane technology and Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP). Between 2011 and 2019, the native Austrian headed the Department of Environmental, Process & Energy Engineering at MCI and played a key role in the internationalization of the study programs. After moving to the private sector, Marco Rupprich worked as a business unit manager in the chemical industry and also in plant engineering, where he was involved in the implementation of various major projects.

"This was also the driving force to go "back to the roots" and take over the management of the Institute for Ecopreneurship at the FHNW School of Life Sciences. I find the exciting combination of applied research in an excellent working and laboratory environment, with the proximity to practice and this together with an interdisciplinary and intercultural team, very exciting," says Marco Rupprich.

As part of the strategic development and objectives of the FHNW School of Life Sciences, the research area "Sustainable Chemistry" is expanding its technical and infrastructural synergies between the Institute of Ecopreneurship and the Institute of Chemistry and Bioanalytics.

Falko Schlottig, Director of the FHNW School of Life Sciences, is delighted with the choice of the new Head of Institute: "We are delighted to have found an experienced and motivated person in Marco Rupprich, who will contribute his expertise to the further development of our research in all areas of environmental technology and environmental sciences, especially in the field of sustainable chemistry and the circular economy. His profound knowledge will help our university to further develop and deepen cooperation with our stakeholders in industry and academia."

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Christoph Hugi for taking over the temporary management of the institute and for his valuable and collegial work. He will remain with the School as research group leader for Sustainable Resource Management and lecturer for Sustainability and Development, Circular Economy, Water Management, Risk and Safety of Technical Systems and Environmental Economics.
