Bern, 15.12.2016 - State Secretary Mauro Dell‘Ambrogio opened this year’s swissnexDay on ’The future of ageing? at the University of Basel today. The event brings together around 200 representatives from the Swiss education, research and innovation scene to discuss the opportunities and challenges of an ageing society. swissnexDay coincides with the annual conference of swissnex heads and counsellors.

Under the heading ‘The Future of Ageing’, over 200 delegates from the fields of higher education, research, business and administration are gathering at the University of Basel today to explore the theme of global population ageing and to discuss the subsequent challenges and opportunities for the Swiss education, research and innovation system.

swissnexDay takes place every year at a different location and coincides with the annual conference of swissnex heads and counsellors. Basel was chosen as the site of this year’s edition due to its role as a centre of research in life sciences.

The conference will be opened by State Secretary Mauro Dell?Ambrogio together with Guy Morin, the president of the Cantonal Council of Basel-Stadt, and Prof. Andrea Schenker-Wicki, the rector of the University of Basel. Experts from the fields of research, business, administration, as well as art and design, will address the theme from various perspectives during a panel discussion. Delegates will then have the opportunity in a series of breakout sessions to discuss aspects ranging from the use of ‘carebots’ in Japan to possibilities for international cooperation for universities in the Amazon or in Asia.

The swissnex network - the Swiss network Schweizer Aussennetz for education, research and innovation - consists of five swissnex locations, three swissnex outposts and twenty science and technology counsellors based in Swiss embassies around the world. Its mission is to support Swiss ERI actors in their internationalisation efforts by facilitating contacts and providing advice, strengthening the visibility of the Swiss ERI landscape abroad and promoting exchanges of knowledge with leading knowledge hubs. The swissnex network is run by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation in close partnership with the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
