Susan Gasser, who has led the FMI for the past 15 years, has stepped down from her role as Director of the FMI, while she continues to lead her research team within the institute. Silvia Arber and Dirk Schübeler, FMI senior group leaders highly regarded for their scientific excellence and strong leadership skills, have been appointed co-directors of the FMI ad interim, from March 1st onwards.
Susan Gasser has stepped down from her role as Director of the FMI in order to dedicate her energies to guide her research team within the institute, and to pursue academic mandates externally. Susan has led the FMI since 2004, and has been instrumental in establishing the FMI as one of the world’s pre-eminent biomedical research institutions.

Silvia Arber and Dirk Schübeler will serve as co-directors of the FMI, while the search for a new FMI Director is underway. Silvia and Dirk are long time members of the FMI family and distinguished scientists. In addition to their duties as co-directors, they will continue to lead their research groups.
Silvia Arber joined the FMI in 2000 and was appointed FMI senior group leader in 2004. She holds a dual appointment at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel and the FMI. The focus of her research is the organization and function of the neuronal circuits controlling movement.

Dirk Schübeler joined the FMI in 2003 and was appointed FMI senior group leader in 2008. His research aims at understanding gene regulation and the function of chromatin.
