University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland - SUPSI

Founded in 1997, SUPSI operates in the fields of First- and Second-level University Education, Continuing Education, Applied Research and in the provision of Services to Businesses and Institutions in the territory. Established under federal law, SUPSI is one of the eight vocational universities recognised by the Swiss Confederation, and is a member of swissuniversities, the organisation bringing together all the various university typologies in Switzerland (vocational university, university, federal polytechnic, teacher training college).

Fundamental features of SUPSI are: the practice-oriented education provided, interdisciplinarity, together with the fact that study programmes and research work undergo continuous adaptations in order to meet the needs of the territory and of the society.

The learning by doing approach adopted means that the students of the 20 Bachelor’s courses and the 13 Master’s courses, conducted in 8 different areas (architecture and construction, design, teacher training, IT technology, healthcare, business administration, social work, music and theatre) can already embark on professional practice while pursuing their studies. This is achieved by modules being completed in flexible mode, compatible with professional working activity, or with other family or personal commitments.

Territorial leader in the Continuing University Education sector, SUPSI supports thousands of professional operators, offering more than 400 courses that are structured flexibly and tailored to to the varied needs of the participants, together with a series of customised courses for companies and institutions. The certificates awarded, Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) cover 15 areas of competence: cooperation and development, construction, design, law, electronics, energy-environment-territory, teaching-learning, computer science, industrial engineering, languages, management, music, healthcare, social sciences and theatre.

The final two SUPSI fields of action are Applied Research and Services to Businesses and Institutions in the territory. 27% of projects are acquired as part of the 2013 Seventh European Framework Programme (compared with a Swiss average of 25.3% and a European average of 22.3%), making SUPSI a leading Swiss university in terms of the acquisition of EU funded projects. Conducted in key sectors by means of the competitive acquisition of projects with major national and European agencies, or mandated by companies and institutions, SUPSI Research records a financial volume of 24 million francs, and employs more than 100 full-time research staff members.
