100%, Zurich, fixed-termThe Optical Nanomaterial Group in the Physics Department at ETH Zurich is looking for a PhD candidate in thin film lithium niobate nanofabrication. Photonic integrated circuits promise advanced functionality for applications such as quantum information processing and precision sensing. Thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) is a maturing photonics platform that can integrate frequency conversion, quantum light sources and high speed electro-optic modulation on a single device. Job descriptionIn the Optical Nanomaterial Group, we specialize in the nanofabrication and optical characterization of TFLN photonic circuits. While the fabrication process is at an advanced stage, further optimization is necessary for lower optical losses, increased component performance, and improved interfacing with optical fibers. The advertised position will work on two main projects: (1) TFLN circuit development for quantum key distribution and (2) TFLN circuit development for quantum enhanced precision measurements. This PhD project aims to further advance the nanofabrication of TFLN photonic circuits at ETH Zurich, including all the processing steps required for low loss and reliable waveguides, developing new components such as efficient edge couplers, and future integration of new materials and processes. The PhD candidate will become an expert in numerous fabrication techniques such as electron beam lithography, physical and chemical etching, deposition and electron microscopy. In addition, the project will involve optical simulations, mask design and optical characterization. ProfileThe successful candidate should be highly motivated and creative, should have a Master’s degree in physics, nanotechnology, material science, photonics or related fields, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface of quantum photonics and material science. This PhD position will involve significant effort in nanofabrication, and any cleanroom experience will be highly beneficial. Workplace
